Nadalian: River Art

An interview by John K. GRANDE

Nadalian is an Iranian sculptor whose life's work involves engendering respect for living creatures and the natural environment. To achieve this, besides living with nature himself, he established sculpture grounds in a peaceful environment in natural surroundings. Water is a living element that contributes to his sculptures, and many of the symbols he engraves and sculpts are derived from ancient mythology and the rituals of pre-Islamic civilizations. more

Nadalian in Green Museum

About Ahmad Nadalian

By Professor  Robert C. Morgan

"I was so impressed with your concept, working at low tide in the early mornings to carve signs that during the day would be concealed.  It calls into question so much about time, history, language, meaning, and sculpture."

Ahmad Nadalian

Ahmad Nadalian who is internationally known for his environmental art projects.  His works draw upon a wide range of symbols from ancient rituals and mythologies with new interpretations to those belonging to the contemporary subject matters that emerge from the use of his new style of languages and technologies. His concepts therefore, are expressed through a variety of media and techniques, including carved stones, installations, performances, video, and web art and interactive pieces which require the participation of the general public.

He is internationally known as one of the most active environmental artists. He has been supported and sponsored by many different organizations in many countries throughout the world, where he has performed numerous environmental art projects in countries such as; Italy, Germany, USA, UK, Spain, France, China, Netherlands, Russia, Uzbekistan,  Tajikistan, Bangladesh, Finland, Lebanon, Syria,  Azerbaijan,  Denmark,  United Arab Emirates,  Qatar,  Kuwait, Turkey, Serbia, South Africa, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Cypress, Georgia, Malaysia, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, India, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador ?and his homeland Iran.

Also he has been invited as a guest lecturer to different universities, organizations and art centers, during his visits he has given talks and workshops on a variety of relevant art issues such as Environmental and Interactive arts

He also organized many major environmental art festivals in his native country Iran, and has helped to supervised young environmental artists around the globe.

The Environment

Nadalian is very sensitive about environment in which he lives. One of the important characteristics of his works is that he always inspired by natural, social, and political environments. Environmental crises, Natural disasters, lack of respect towards old heritage, war, and terrorism. These are issues that he focuses upon, and shows them in his works. The Environment is not only sources of his work, but he finds it the best place in which to present his work.

Virtual Space

Nadalian uses diverse media to promote his works. Via photography, videos and text he documents his work and shows them as a video installations. He presents his works via new media, and utilizes the capabilities of the digital age, such as the Internet. Some of his work is  not a documentation of his environmental art. The work has been produced in cyber space. A number of websites, such as  www.riverart.net and www.nadalian.com are dedicated to his work. He believes that a website is not only a place to introduce his work, but a contemporary way of conveying his ideas and art.

In Nadalians work the audience is not passive. They can touch, discover, and through interaction they can be creative. Within this interaction people can create their own environment. They discover that his work is human friendly. In the installations they can change the multimedia, and they can click and change the sequence, color, and composition.

Synthesis primitivism and high tech

Works by Nadalian show a primitive synthesis and high tech. Some of his subject maters existed from the beginning of time when humans first started to evolve on earth in relation to global mythology. On the other hand Nadalian takes issues of the digitization of the beginning of 21 century and produce them in cyber space with the possibility of interactivity. In the one hand his works are very solid or permanent and on the other hand they are temporary and cannot resist in the long-term.

Nadalian works show:

Respect towards the natural environment

The vulnerability of mankind

The internationality of the problem of terrorism

New technologies and freedom of expression

(Eva Shakouri Torreadrado).

Ahmad Nadalians works are mainly symbolic. His sketches, paintings, carvings and rock structures focus on themes of fertility and creation. In recent years, alongside his sketches, paintings and carvings, he has presented his concepts in rock installations. Spending most of his time in the mountain region of Damavand, he derives his forms from those already in nature.

His works are based in primitive art. He concentrates upon the ancient concepts and methods that are slowly vanishing. His choice of stone as a medium, and his technique, are in accordance with ancient traditions. Yet he does not attempt to give a primitive appearance to his art. His technique is different from ancient approaches. He displays his work in nature, on the ground. The presence of newborns in his work testifies to his interests; he is drawn not only to the past, but also to the future.
His only concern is that humanity, at present or in the future, may be less in harmony with the past, and with the earth and heavens.

Nadalian presents his works via new media, and utilizes the capabilities of the digital age, such as the Internet. A number of websites, such as  www.riverart.net and www.nadalian.com are dedicated to introducing his works.  He believes that a website is not only a place to introduce his work, but a contemporary way of conveying his ideas and art.

01  was the title of a piece by Ahmad Nadalian at the Second "New Art" exhibition.  A white screen measuring 3.45 x 2.45 cm, printed with an allover design of the digits 0 and 1, reflected the silhouette of rolex replica sale who passed between the screen and a projector set up behind it. A webcam installed on the other side of the screen recorded the passing figures as a streaming file, displayed them on the monitor of a computer nearby, and placed them on the artists' website (www.nadalian.com).

The virtual world recreated by this piece was not its only reference to the internet. Its interactive nature, allowing the spectators to take part in the creation of the final projected image, was an important element drawn from the interactivity of hyperspace. For Nadalian, the internet is transformed space; temporally continuous but spatially fragmented. He displays this fragmentation in the continuity of his webpages.

The 01 pattern within and around the silhouette of the human body highlights the virtual forays of the contemporary state, conducted through the medium of zeros and ones. And while the artwork had been conceived as a conceptual representation with modern technology as its medium, the artist had not completely discarded aesthetic considerations. The contrast of black and white was especially effective in a sequence in which a young spectators moved before the screen with transparent sheets in various colors.

The work was an allegory of the digital and virtual landscapes which surround contemporary man.
